7 Unexpected Changes When You Go From Dark Hair To Blonde Hair

Updated: Jul 21, 2023

Crucial considerations before going blonde. Number 3 changed my life -- in a really, really good way.

1. The color of clothes hits different.

Dark hair supports most clothes colors. This includes bold colors, bright colors, those colors that are extra. Blonde hair doesn't. Blonde hair clashes with certain (many) colors. After going blonde, you may find that you can't pull off that lime green crop top anymore. Or that bright red sweater. The palette of shades that flatter you as a blonde will depend largely on the particular shade of blonde your hair is. Neutrals and earth tones are pretty universally flattering, and don't worry, you'll figure out what colors work for you in time.

2. Make up shades hit different.

Dark hair supports most shades of make up. This includes bright shades, deep shades, dramatic shades. Blonde hair doesn't. As mentioned above, blonde hair clashes with certain (many) colors. After going blonde, you may find that you can't pull off that cobalt blue eye shadow anymore. Or that deep burgundy lipstick. Again, neutrals and earth tones are universally flattering. Experiment to see what works best for you.

3. Your face looks different in photos.

Dark hair calls attention to the shadows in your face, while blonde hair calls attention to the highlights of your face. When shadows stand out, facial features look sharper and more defined. When highlights stand out, facial features look more soft and less defined. Depending on your skin tone, blonde hair may create more or less contrast in your overall look and aesthetic.

4. Your eyelashes become way more noticeable.

Assuming you've color treated or applied some kind of make up to your brows to match your golden locks, the darkest shade on your face will now be your eyelashes. When the darkest shade on your face is your lashes (whether it's your natural lashes, mascara, falsies or extensions), they can be seen from across the room. This makes your eyes a much bigger focus of attention on your face, both in photos and irl.

5. Your hair cut and style will be more pronounced.

With dark hair, it's hard to see the texture and length of individual hairs. If your stylist makes a mistake and chops a few strands too short, there's a good chance no one will notice, including you. With blonde hair, you can't help but notice the texture and length of individual hairs. If your stylist makes a mistake and chops a few strands too short, you, and everyone else, will notice. Blonde hair requires more care and attention when styling because imperfections are more visible and therefore more noticeable.

6. People will have feelings about your hair.

Bleach blond hair has a polarizing effect. Regardless of demographic, some people love the look of bleach blonde hair, while others abhor it. It's really a matter of personal preference, and over time, you'll probably notice that people tend to have strong feelings about it, one way or another. But at the end of the day, all that matters is whether or not you like it -- it is your hair after all. So don't worry about the opinion of others and do what makes you happy.

7. You'll probably become a hair product junkie.

The process of bleaching dark hair blonde inevitably causes damage to hair. Having dry, crispy, straw-like hairs and a myriad of wispy flyaways protruding from the top of your head pointing in all different directions is a highly disconcerting experience for most. If you find yourself in this situation, you'll most likely want to repair and restore the health of your hair as soon as humanly possible. This will require the help of hair care products, and being highly motivated, you'll probably become an expert on hair care products in no time.
